Everyone Knows Someone
Mission
Everyone Knows Someone is a theatrical ensemble performance designed to bring attention to and destigmatize abortion. It is named for one of the common slogans used during protests and awareness campaigns: Everyone loves someone who has had an abortion. Though abortion is common in America, many people still feel a veil of shame and secrecy about their procedures. It just isn’t talked about. By telling stories from people who have had abortions in different age, racial, and economic groups, we hope to highlight the many circumstances that may lead to a person’s choice to terminate a pregnancy. We also intend to incorporate the wide variety of feelings that are commonly reported from people who have had the procedure: Fear, shame, sadness, anger, guilt, relief. We hope this will bring awareness and foster understanding among people who have not experienced this particular procedure, and also bring comfort and community to people who have, who may still be struggling under the assumption that they are alone in their feelings about their experience.
